Elrod’s strong prose and excellent pacing are not diminished by being confined to the boundaries of a pre-established universe.

Elrod- This is the seventh novel that was released for the Ravenloft campaign setting of Dungeons and Dragons. There was a character I really enjoyed who appeared in the campaign we played that died incredibly fast. I took one of her hands, and she straightened how like a tall flower she was, and with a bow, lightly kissed her fingertips. This was an oddly enjoyable book!

Without giving away anything that isn’t on the back cover, I just thought his feelings about Tatyana came out of the blue, and were uncharacteristic — required by the story rather than naturally evolving.


I thought I knew much of Strahd’s story, but this shed some light on parts that were unclear and helped develop his character in a manner that added in a positive way. Intimately painted are his dusty sense of humour, his remote sense of honour, and his castle. If the other entries in the series are anything like this, I’m going to be indisposed for a bit.

On the bright side, it did give me a good idea of how better to play Strahd when he encounters my players! Thankfully, by the third chapter, things start to pick up. It has that 90’s cheesy factor to it. This stands as one of the better Ravenloft novels. Tatyana isn’t possessed of any real character – she shows up, she’s pretty, it is established that some dudes really want to bang her AND put a ring on it despite her personality being equivalent to a luke-warm meat pie, and she is boringly polite.

Brutal and ruthless, he still possesses a keen intellect and an unwavering personal code of honor, which makes him a freshly unique character in a world of monsters.

Pretty one-dimensional, but they were decent and loyal to Strahd. Ravenloft 1 – 10 of 23 books. You may start to think that what Strahd is saying isn’t what really is happening. Sure, I got that he was an older man who was saddled with being first child, sent off to war, no time for luxury and or relaxation. I am not saying that his life after his change was not filled with loneliness and despair, just that I wish some of his extreme evil deeds had been addressed.


Extremely derivative, but that would be expected by anyone familiar with the Ravenloft series or setting. The rest of the novel is basically Van Richten reading the journal.

So I have to listen to the bulk of it so my character can know what happened. This is the kind of story you hope to read when you pick up a Forgotten Realms-style story or single book in a long series. This is the best Vampire book I have ever read. When I discovered this book existed, I grabbed a copy and it has been sitting on my shelf for a while.

His character is basically the same throughout the whole book, no development.
