Thermics of Buildings

The subject of the Thermal behavior of Buildings has the following objectives to be achieved by the student: Performance-based selection of materials and components. Requirements of hygrothermal comfort.

Thermal behavior in the winter. Thermal behavior in the summer.

Geometry of building insolation. Thermal simulation in dynamic regime.


Portuguese thermal performance code: Performance-based selection of insulation materials. Technical and economic selection of insulation materials.

Measures for the improvement of thermal performance of existing buildings.

Experimental determination of thermal properties. The energy efficiency of buildings assumes today the highest importance, which justifies a curricular unit that addresses the physical phenomena, the comfort, the models, the regulation and the technologies for thermal insulation.

There are nlec theory classes a week, of the explanatory variety, with each class lasting around 50 minutes.

There is also one practical class a week, lasting 1h50, where exercises are solved, assignments are done, and the matters addressed are discussed. We seek to make sure the content of practical classes, whenever possible, is given in parallel with the theory classes.

FEUP – Thermics of Buildings

During theory classes, overhead and PowerPoint are basically used as a kind jte support for the exposition, which allows to better follow up on students and for them to visualize the content of the subject matter. Students have a class at the Building Physics Laboratory in order to come in contact with the equipment used for measuring temperature and humidity in construction materials and elements.
